that the war on drugs is what is needed to protect the youth of the nation, there are many others that are arguing that legalizing marijuana would do far more
good than harm. The following paper examines the issues and argues for the legalization of marijuana. Legalizing Marijuana As mentioned, there are individuals who feel that marijuana should
remain illegal to protect the youth of the nation. They would argue that marijuana is a drug that often encourages people to try harsher drugs, a drug that is dangerous
to ones health, and a drug that can truly limit the growth of an individual. There are studies that demonstrate smoking marijuana can impair judgment and lead to a life
that is essentially without a future as chronic users are often lazy and have no goals. One author notes "although marijuana cannot be conclusively linked to amotivational syndrome, most marijuana
smokers will concede that under the influence of regular intoxication they are not as likely to accomplish worthwhile goals, and are more likely to focus on transient and meaningless pleasures
of stimulation" (Choosehelp.com). But one could also claim that an alcoholic has similar problems and often do little or nothing with their lives. Not all people who drink alcohol are
alcoholics, and alcohol is legal. Not all people who smoke marijuana use it to the extent that they do nothing with their lives. One of the most controversial aspects
of legalizing marijuana is in relationship to marijuana for medicinal purposes. It has well proven to be very helpful in many medical cases: "cannabis has analgesic effects in pain conditions
secondary to injury (e.g. spinal cord injury) or disease (e.g. HIV disease, HIV drug therapy) of the nervous system" (Drugwarfacts.com). And yet many still argue it should not be legal
