seems to have no solid answer. On one side of the issue you have people who have believed in the old adage that marijuana is a gateway drug, leading to
other types of drug use, and as such should never be legalized. For others the argument is concerning only medical marijuana, and then there are those who argue that prohibition
does not work and that marijuana should be legalized for many positive reasons. The following paper examines why marijuana should be legalized, arguing that this is the best approach to
the problem economically and socially. Legalizing Marijuana First off, as noted, many argue that if a person uses marijuana then they will want to use harder drugs and
this cannot be accepted in the society. This, however, has yet to be proven and it is believed by many that such an adage is nothing more than societys way
of convincing people of something that is not true, a tale told to children to keep them away from drugs. However, the argument against legalizing marijuana clearly still rages as
many argue that, "decriminalization would only encourage both drug use and other criminal activity... while legalization would not only lead to more use--and concurrent problems--but would not eliminate criminal activity
from pot bootleggers" (ONeill, 2002; NA). The above statement presents many of the arguments in favor of legalizing marijuana. For the most part legalizing marijuana would likely give some
people the understanding that it was alright to try the drug, use it, and perhaps have problems just because it was legalized. But, the majority of people would not do
this it seems, and generally speaking, people who want to smoke marijuana will smoke it whether it is legal or not. As one individual notes, in relationship to children: "For
