aside from the war on drugs proving ineffective, it has also cost the country a great deal money, as well as costing its victims a great deal of suffering. The
prisons today are sorely overcrowded due to non-violent drug offenders, individuals who do, on the average, more prison time than violent criminals. Bearing these simple facts in mind we present
the following paper which discusses how the legalization of marijuana could positively affect the society and its economy. Legalizing Marijuana First off we look at some of the
pros and cons of legalizing marijuana. Those who argue against legalizing marijuana claim that it is a very harmful drug, a gateway drug, that leads to the use of heavier
and heavier drugs. They argue that whole many believe smoking pot is not dangerous, it is very dangerous because peoples reactions are slower which could put them in seriously damaging
situations. These are the most powerful arguments against legalizing marijuana. The reasons for legalizing marijuana are far more numerous and far more powerful. Legalizing marijuana would take the drug off
the black market and put it into a category where the government could tax it and made additional funds. Legalizing marijuana would take perhaps millions of prisoners out of prison,
thus freeing up money and space for more serious criminals. If marijuana were legal the law enforcement industry could spend more time looking for dangerous and serious criminals. With legalized
marijuana people who suffer from painful illnesses could readily find even some small comfort without worrying about whether what they were doing was legal or illegal. In essence, there are
