Drugs does not work and other people who argue that the War on Drugs does work and needs to remain in place to protect children and the society from drugs and drug addiction. The following paper examines the pros and the cons of legalizing drugs and argues that drugs should be legalized. Legalizing Drugs For those who are against the legalization of drugs the primary argument revolves around protecting the society and especially children from the dangers of drugs. It is believed that if drugs are legalized children will have easier access to them and thus become addicted and ruin their lives. It is also believed that adults will do the same if the drugs are legalized. In essence, those who are against legalizing drugs think it is very dangerous to the individual and to society. There is also the tradition of the reality that drugs are illegal. Many people just argue for drugs remaining illegal because that is the way they feel things should be. Because drugs, as far as they know, have always been illegal they should remain illegal so that people are protected. Those who argue for the legalization of drugs seem to have many more arguments than those who argue against legalization. For example, most people do not know that cocaine was once a common ingredient in Coca-Cola. Many social pressures led to the eventual criminalization of cocaine. But, there was a time, and a time not too long ago, when cocaine was in a lot of products that were easily obtained by anyone, even cough syrup. One could argue that making cocaine illegal did not change the number of people addicted, but it surely did increase the price of the drug.
