the tide has slowly turned away from the hard catch phrases that were so often spouted by both Republican and Democrat politicians in the seventies and eighties. Marijuana specifically is
becoming socially acceptable. Never truly classified as an addictive substance, many well known individuals are now admitting to using the drug years ago. First, looking at
marijuana as a drug, unlike many other compounds on the market today has medical benefits and few side effects. Unlike the "mothers little helpers" Mick Jagger sang about in the
seventies, referring to Valium, or Prozac which is the wonder drug of the nineties, pot has been present for a long time and science has yet to prove that it
is lethal. In fact, "Reefer Madness", a supposedly factual documentary, had become a cult film because of its absurdities. Thus, many pot smokers continue to mistrust government information. What
information is distributed is in regard to mental, affective, and behavioral changes which are the most easily recognized consequences of marijuana use; additionally affected are concentration, motor coordination, and memory
which is adversely impacted (Voth,1994).While occasional use may be no more dangerous than alcohol, it is chronic use that impairs motivation. Yet, likewise, so do other legal drugs as well
as other things commonly found in society. Nintendo may be cited as impairing motivation to study, for example. More serious symptoms such as psychosis has been linked to the drug
