Much has been written and said about legal and ethical issues associated with ecommerce. Certainly there are issues that bear scrutiny and businesses must ensure that they protect the
privacy of their customers while also not abusing that privacy themselves, but in the end the same principles that apply to sound business in the physical setting also apply in
the virtual realm. Even so, international business transactions, nations rights to sovereignty and privacy are leading issues that can be of concern in ecommerce. International Business Transactions
Early in the new century the European Union (EU) established and implemented a strict Data Privacy Directive that the EU Commission requires every business in
the EU to honor and abide by in their virtual business transactions (Malonis, 2002). Because of the ease with which businesses and individuals can conduct business over the Internet,
the EU Commission wanted to extend as well its requirements to US businesses reaching into the EU. The purpose of the EU Commission
was to protect the personal and financial information of consumers residing in the EU. Negotiations between the US and EU resulted in a compromise whereby "U.S. businesses agreed to
regulate themselves and stand accountable to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which pledged to punish any lapses in protecting and securing the personal and financial information of EU consumers"
