small, honest mistake can blow up in the face of the executive who made the decision, and when a bad incident occurs, this is even more serious. Many companies faced
with a negative incident such as an oil spill or other disaster often run to the podium to do damage control. They want to save face and confront the media
head on. They want to make it seem as if they are not hiding anything, but sometimes too much is said and this can create legal problems. Caution should prevail
when firms are faced with these types of decisions. In a case study submitted by a student, a disastrous event occurred that would put an oil companys reputation on the
line. the Ashland Oil Company was faced with a difficult problem as a 3.9 million gallon tank collapsed ("Harvard," 1990). Oil spilled. Many participated in the clean up effort and
in a few days, executives boarded a plane to Pittsburgh to make appropriate speeches ("Harvard," 1990). While the executives would address the media, as with any event, new information would
come out to render initial reports false. For example, initial reports suggested that oil never entered the nearby river ("Harvard," 1990). That was false ("Harvard," 1990). There was damage to
the water and this is an important issue that would need to be addressed. When any event such as this occurs, there is often liability. No firm in this day
