Von Huben 7/2010 Please Introduction Students sometimes come in conflict with schools and school boards, ending up in court. This paper considers two cases in which students are involved. Discussion The first case is Safford Unified School District #1 et al. v. Redding, which deals with the strip-search of a 13-year old middle school female student. The second is Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, decided in 1969. In the Redding case, Assistant Principal Wilson received a "tip" from another student that Savana Redding was passing out drugs. Based on this, he called her into the office and showed her a day planner that contained "knives and other contraband" (Safford Unified School District #1 et al. v. Redding, 2009). She denied any knowledge of the items, but said that she had loaned the planner to a friend, Marissa. Wilson then brought out four "prescription-strength, and one over-the-counter, pain relief pills," which the school bans without prior permission (Safford Unified School District #1 et al. v. Redding, 2009). (It was ibuprofen, hardly a dangerous drug.) At any rate, Wilson searched her backpack and other belongings with her consent and then, not satisfied, had his administrative assistant take Savana to the nurse and strip search her, during which search her breasts and pelvic area were partially exposed (Safford Unified School District #1 et al. v.
