that lecturing is boring. The audience can nod off or become distracted because they are being talked at. This is why the successful lecturer plans carefully and incorporates some sort
of activity. There are certain qualifications one must have to lecture in higher education. Any permanent position as a higher education lecturer will most likely require a doctoral degree
(Armstrong 2009). In some cases, a masters degree will suffice but these types of positions are few and far between (Armstrong 2009). A doctoral degree inherently means the individual has
an especially strong command of the subject area. Obtaining a job as a lecturer in a college or university during ones Ph.D.s studies will place the person in a good
position of securing a professorial position because it provides the experience needed to prove ones ability to lecture and teach. Any lecture must be exciting and surprising to hold
an audiences attention. There are also skills that are common to all lecturers, regardless of venue. Birnbaumer (2004) reported there are four specific components in any effective lecture: enthusiasm on
the part of the lecturer, preparation and organization, clarity, the ability to stimulate and motivate audience members and both a love for and knowledge of he topic on which one
is going to lecture. Birnbaumer (2004) also identified the major components for any lecturer: "planning, preparation, presentation, postmortem." Planning must begin with information about and knowledge of the members
of the audience (Birnbaumer 2004). This sets the tone for the lecture. The next step is to prepare the lecture which can take a long time because the lecturer must
gather, synthesize and analyze the material about the topic that will be presented (Birnbaumer 2004). The content must then be organized in a rational way so that it is
