a variety of reasons. Some people likely write these books in order to make money, to gain a more in-depth following, such as major celebrities. But, some memoirs seem focused
on being somewhat cathartic for the author, dealing with issues from their past and sharing them as a way of perhaps understanding their past, leaving a legacy, and moving beyond
that past. This seems to be the case with The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It is a very personal work that clearly makes the author a bit vulnerable. The
following paper examines the memoir and legacy of this particular book. Leaving a Legacy: The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls is apparently a successful writer who started this book
many times but ultimately began, in earnest, to write and complete it. It also seems to be the case that she often did not tell anyone of her upbringing or
her past until she wrote this book. That is because her childhood was less than idyllic and she was one of four children born to parents who were far less
than conventional. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was an idealistic artist. They never stayed long in one place and were not the "perfect" parents for they often
neglected their children. But, at the same time they also clearly instilled in their children a love of adventure and knowledge. In an example of how the parents were
less than conventional it is noted that once her brother fell off the couch and busted his head open. There was blood everywhere but their father wasnt going to take
him to the hospital. "Mom said...one kid in the hospital at a time is enough" and the father said "Brians head is so hard, I think the floor took more
