that forms the foundation of this relationship, the information that these nurses give families is "attended to and valued by the family" (Redstone and West, 2004, p. 97). This influence can be instrumental in the future health of the child, particularly in regards to chronic conditions. Furthermore, the relationship between nurses and pediatric patients is also instrumental in helping hospitalized children cope with unfamiliar surroundings and occasional isolation from parents and loved ones (Zengerle-Levy, 2006). While student nurses in pediatrics realize that establishing such a relationship is important, nursing curricula often does not address this issue adequately. This is a lack addressed in a study described by Coetzee (2004). In the "Background" section of the abstract to this study, Coetzee (2004) indicates that the undergraduate nursing students enrolled at the University of Cape Town, South Africa anticipate their pediatric placement with emotions that range from "keen expectation" to "anxious avoidance" and that this particular part of their nursing education has been described by students as the "most stressful" portion in their nursing program (Coetzee, 2004, p. 639). Reacting to this situation, Coetzee designed a study that explores the nature of student learning as they endeavor to learn to apply their nursing skills to the care of children. The following critique of this study will both summarize and analyze the various sections of Coetzees article, which describes this research, and was published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing in 2004.
