Downes (2005) comments on this aspect of online learning as he notes that learning online is "characterized not only by greater autonomy for the learner, but also greater emphasis on active learning, with creation, communication and participation playing key roles." Considering the stark difference between online learning and learning in the traditional classroom environment, it is not surprising that The process of acclimating myself to this change is taking time. To accomplish this goal, I am currently putting considerable effort into learning my way around the AIU Online Virtual Campus (VC). However, it is also true that I find this process to be fascinating and rewarding, as I explore the web sites possibilities. The first thing I did was take the "Live Campus Tour," which was extremely informative, as it demonstrates many of the learning options available to online students (AIU, 2008). I believe that I will utilize the library, email, discussion boards and access to technical support as the most frequently used features. While this environment is becoming increasingly familiar with practice, it still remains problematic to navigate it efficiently, but I am learning. Halio (2004) teaches an online freshman English course and, in this article, records her experience getting emails from students. From this information, some facts are quite evident. For example, judging from one students experience without outside stressors, it is detrimental to achieving academic success to remain silent about problems. This student ended up plagiarizing, and thereby "put herself in a desperate situation," rather than keeping in touch with the instructor, explaining circumstances and "asking for an extension" (Halio, 2004, p. 58).
