Essay / Research Paper Abstract

Personal response to reading The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh. Reading The Miracle of Mindfulness is a practice in mindfulness because of the author’s and translator’s simple use of mindfulness in creating the written record of Thich Nhat Hanh’s Vietnamese Buddhist philosophy. For example, even before getting past the introduction, on page viii (the second page of the introduction), the reader begins to become aware of his breathing solely with the first mention of its importance. This is before the first definition of breath on page fifteen as a “bridge of consciousness” that unites body and mind and provides the means for focusing on breathing to practice mindfulness and calm. The Miracle of Mindfulness is a method that draws you in and gets you practicing it without agreement and without opportunity for dissent – and as you read through the book, you learn each message in a very personal way through the conscious act of reading. 1 work cited. jvmindfl.rtf

It is amazing how proficient the author is at teaching exactly what is meant by Buddhist mindfulness in only a few examples. Most people begin a discourse on religious teachings by mentioning the ripples in the pond, as does Mobi Ho in his introduction (xi). They also begin with obscure examples of thinking about oneself in relationship to earthly objects, as Ho does in the spoon search (x), but Nhat Hanh relieves the reader of obscurity by beginning with an example of mindfulness before defining it. It is a story that many can relate to if they have ever had an interpersonal relationship with anyone outside their birth families, the story of Allen and Joey. While the story appears to be about the child Joeys innocence, the story is about Allen offering the reader an inestimably valuable flower - "unlimited time" by thinking that every minute he spends with Joey is Allens time, not Joeys (2).
