newborn babies, these idyllic lovers are completely ignorant about the world around them or how they even got into the garden of Eden in the first place. They must
receive an education on the ways of the world and what is expected of them, but they are not necessarily privy to the same information. What Adam and Eve
learn and how they learn it is as different as night and day or male and female. The learning cycle can be broken down into two phases - before
and after their fall from grace and into the sinful temptations orchestrated by a cunning Satan. The way in which Adam and Eve are educated reveals a great deal
about the patriarchal society of Miltons time for the learning process is structured on the basis of gender. Literary critic Larry L. Langford observed, "The identities of Adam and
Eve do not result from any biological engineering on Gods part, but from a type of social engineering that dictates certain roles for each to fulfill" (119). In other
words, though they receive their education differently, Adam and Eve learn through conditioning how they are supposed to conduct themselves in their primitive society. Adam is the embodiment of perfection,
and he is clearly defined as the intellectual superior of the two. He is depicted as like a son of God, who as any proud father would, wants the
finest education possible for him. It is he who receives all of the formal educational instruction from angels who have been hand-picked by God. Eve was conceived practically
as an afterthought. She was constructed for Adams rib so that he could have a life partner. Therefore, because she was created for Adams pleasure, her education centers
