to generalize information and demonstrate a range of applications. Cognitive development demonstrates the cumulative nature of learned information and often corresponds with a stage-based view of human development.
While dogs and other animals can demonstrate learned behaviors, cognition is a function of the human mind that allows for the application of what has been learned to the process
of understanding. Learning and behavior are connected in that learning, whether for an animal or a human, frequently results in behavioral changes. For example, Pavlov showed that
dogs could respond to ringing bell with the expectation of food, and even in the absence of food, still had behavioral responses to the ringing of the bell. Learning
and conditioning, then, relate the belief that repeated experiences can result in a set of behavioral changes that are based on expected or believed consequences or rewards. If an
infant is given a positive emotional response from parents each time he grimaces, the child repeats the behavior and the child learns to smile. After some time, the child
has learned the behavior and participates in it even in the absence of an immediate positive response. Learning can occur on a number of levels and in relation
to different structural elements. Rote learning and experiential learning are two forms that are often used in the educational setting and reflect different approaches. Rote learning is based
on the use of repetition and positive or negative reinforcers that support the integration of repetitive information. Rote learning, then, can be used in a mathematics class, for example,
to memorize math facts. Rote learning is used when repeated information and drills are perceived as beneficial to the creation of a habitual behavior. Experiential learning is
