who "speak" the same language. Sign language is an important skill, and one which has the potential to help a great
many people. Imagine not being able to hear and only being able to interpret the entire world through the hand signs, or "words", of another person. One can
clearly see just how valuable this language actually is. There are many theories as to how one acquires language and how
a new language is understood by the learner. These theories vary and it is likely that a combination of them is the reality of second langauage acquisition. Understanding
these theories then provides insight into the means by which a person learns a second language and how that language is interpreted. The Difficulties and Successes of Learning
a Second Language There are actually many theories which apply to second language acquisition. And, in this field, perhaps Stephen Krashen is
among the most notable. Essentially, he believes that natural language and conversation is the best means of acquiring a second language. Therefore, he believes that the goal should
not be for instructors to harp about grammar and technical merits of a language but to simply speak conversationally and for the students goal to be sending and understanding communication
