racial profiling that has victimized African Americans across class barriers" (Roy-Campbell, 2003). One of the fields in which African Americans have been victimized is the field of education. As we
are all well aware, "There are countless studies and articles pointing to the academic achievement gap between African American and White students. Explanations for the wide disparity in achievement have
ranged from the effects of poverty to the access to resources" (Roy-Campbell, 2003). And, considering that there are so many different theories as to why African Americans have been left
behind, it comes as little surprise to know that just as many different approaches have been implemented in order to change things. However, when we assume that the reason for
African Americans being left behind may be, for example, poverty, we begin to address the poverty and forget other areas of concern that may need attention. With these simple illustrations
in mind it becomes incredibly obvious that the subject is a delicate and complex one. The subject of education is complex enough and to add to that a history of
victimization makes the issues even more confusing and allusive. Janice E. Hale attempts to make the subject far simpler and thus easier to approach and perhaps even fix in her
book "Learning While Black: Creating Educational Excellence for African American Children." The following paper first examines the strengths and weaknesses of her work, and then discusses her theories and ideas
as they compare to other theories and ideas prevalent today. The paper finishes with a discussion of how Hales work could be applied to the education of African American males.
