As learning is intrinsic to the very survival of organizations, an understanding of the various learning theories, as they apply to adult learners, is crucial to the successful implementation of professional developmental programs and interventions designed by HR management to meet this critical need. Research points out that an individuals place of employment is the "natural site for extending higher education to adult learners, in the same way that high school is the natural site for extending higher education to traditional 18-year-olds" (Flint, 2001, p. 3). Due to the fact that national economies "operate by new rules that reward business flexibility and innovation," employers are the "natural allies," as well as the principal customers, for the main product of institutions of higher education, which happens to be "education people who can adeptly apply their knowledge and skill on the job" (Flint, 2001, p. 3).
