September-October). Assessing the critical thinking skills of faculty: what do the findings mean for nursing education?. Nursing Education Perspectives 27(5), 260(9). [Cognitive learning theory]. This is a report of a
study that considers cognitive skills needed for different critical thinking tasks. The authors report that critical thinking skills are needed for nurses who face the many complex situations in health
care today. The cognitive skills identified as essential are the ability to use metacognitive strategies and the ability to involve oneself in reflective thinking. Other cognitive skills needed include the
ability to analyze the situation, draw inferences, evaluate what is happening and the ability to apply both inductive and deductive reasoning. Nurses must be able to think on more than
just one level simultaneously. Nurse educators must be able to teach students these cognitive skills. For complex thinking cognitive skills that means nurse educators need to teach their students to
look at knowledge as relative and flexible as opposed to static and absolute. The investigators used the California Critical Thinking Skills Test and the Learning Environment Preferences in their research.
