Learning Style Information The theory of learning styles places emphasis on the way in which students learn; it "implies that how much individuals learn has more to do with whether the educational experience is geared toward their particular style of learning than whether or not they are smart" (Learning styles, 2001). In other words, educators need to know how students learn, based on an assessment of the students psychological types (Learning styles, 2001). The theory is based on research "demonstrating that, as the result of heredity, upbringing, and current environmental demands, different individuals have a tendency to both perceive and process information differently" (Learning styles, 2001). The methods learners use to process information can be classified as "concrete and abstract perceivers" and "active and reflective processors" (Learning styles, 2001). "Concrete perceivers" learn by direct experience, "by doing, acting, sensing and feeling" while abstract perceivers absorb information "through analysis, observation, and thinking" (Learning styles, 2001). "Active processors make sense of an experience by immediately using the new information" while reflective processors understand it by thinking about it (Learning styles, 2001). Traditional educational methods "tend to favor abstract perceiving and reflective processing" above concrete perceiving and active processing; that is, students are still expected to sit and listen to lectures and read textbooks, take notes, and observe; and then thinking about what theyve learned instead of actually trying it out-say going to Chinatown and trying to speak Chinese (Learning styles, 2001).
