(MacFadgen, 2008). This learner is often just beginning higher education studies or they are returning to school for a full degree, further knowledge or to pursue a higher degree. The mature learner is different from the students who have just graduated from high school and gone straight on to college. The mature learner has experiences the recent high school graduate does not have. These are life experiences through which the learner has gained knowledge, insight and even marketable skills. They think differently. They may find themselves listening to ideas and opinions their experience tells them is untrue. They will most likely hear younger students forcefully stating opinions they find na?ve. Mature learners are also likely to face barriers and challenges the younger student does not face. Depending on how mature the student is, they may not be able to remember things as easily and they may need more time to accommodate new information. MacFadgen (2008) investigated the barriers mature students face compared to what characteristics made this learner successful. The investigator concluded that persistence and commitment were two characteristics that motivated the mature student and that led to that students success in higher education pursuits, i.e., in degree courses (MacFadgen, 2008). The investigator also found there were specific themes relative to the mature students first year in higher education degree courses that lent themselves to success, including: awareness of their own assets, e.g., experiences and knowledge; relationships with professors; relationships with peers; how supportive the institutions infrastructure was; and experiential learning opportunities (MacFadgen, 2008). In that same study, the investigator found that professors commented that mature students are more diverse, more goal-directed, more determined and more discriminating than younger students (MacFadgen, 2008).
