kinesthetic. Today, descriptions of learning styles have become far more sophisticated and complex, primarily because we know so much more about the brain. Even so, most people have a dominant
learning style, which means they learn best when that style is used. That does not mean they can not learn through other styles. In fact, many people can learn in
different ways. Further, our learning styles can change throughout our lives. For instance, we know that infants and young children will learn first through the kinesthetic channel, touching and moving
and they will model what they see, which would be visual. Kolb identified two dimensions of learning Reflective vs. Experiential and Concrete vs. Abstract, which leads to four combinations: Converging,
which means the person learns best by solving problems; Accommodating, which means the individual is very hands-on and people-oriented; Diverging, wherein the individual prefers things like brainstorming and observing; and
Assimilating, which means the person prefers to put information together in a logical format (Hay Group, n.d.). These can be equated to personality types: the abstract learner is intuitive, the
concrete learner is sensate, the extrovert is experiential and the introvert is reflective (Hay Group, n.d.). Dunn and Dunn presented a much more complex model of learning styles. this model
is founded on certain principles, such as: most people can learn; instructional environments, etc. need to respond to the different learning styles; everyone has strengths; when learning styles of students
are considered in the classroom, students will have higher achievement and more (Lovell, 2009). Dunn and Dunn incorporate 21 different "learning style elements" in their model (Lovell, 2009).
Space does not permit a full description of these elements, thus, only the five broad elements are reported here: Environmental Stimuli Preferences, e.g. sound and temperature; Emotional Stimuli Preferences, e.g.,
