who has learning disabilities is one category that may be the least discussed in the field. There is a great deal of literature on gifted students who have a physical
disability, such as blindness but less about the student who is gifted but also has a learning disability. Articles on this condition did not appear much before the early 1980s.
Some authors, however, have examined biographies and identified some well-known gifted persons as having a learning disability, such as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. In their article, "Gifted
students with learning disabilities: who are they?", Lovett and Lewandowski (2006) refer to this situation as "dual exceptionality" (p. 515). There are many challenges with this group of students, one
of which is diagnosis. Different types of assessment are needed to measure the childs level of giftedness and also to identify the childs learning disability. This child might have superior
intelligence but be performing at grade level. Often, the childs real ability level is not recognized. The authors believe there may be a very large population of gifted/learning
disabled children who have been ignored. Part of the problem lies in how each of these classifications is actually defined. But if a child who is performing below their potential
is diagnosed with a learning disability, this group fits into this diagnosis. Defining giftedness is more complex because the category is no longer measured only by IQ assessments. It has
become a very broad category and identification is based on things like standardized tests but not IQ assessments, recommendations, and other abilities, such as musical or leadership abilities. We are
all familiar with Gardners multiple intelligences theory that has taken over in schools. The authors comment that IQ tests have been shown to be consistent and dependable, "both
