special needs. When addressing the concept of a learning disability to concerned parents, educators must recognize their role in the educational process and also relate to the potential
for each child. Educators in special education classrooms have three specific classroom directives that they must address to create a positive educational environment for all learners: addressing the needs
of special needs learners; maintaining a focus on content area programming; and coordinating service providers or educational paraprofessionals for special needs learners (McGrath, 2007). At the same time, educators
must also understand their role in creating a respectful and working classroom culture, including a focus on the value of special education as a philosophical basis for educational attainment.
Learners in classrooms that have special education children participating have a more authentic learning experience, one reflective of the varied populations and heterogeneity of learning communities (Jorgensen et al., 2006).
Parents, then, should be supported in their advocacy for programming for their children and understand that they can take an active part in their childs education. Explaining a
specific learning disability to concerned parents needs to reflect on the belief that learners with special needs have potential and that they can make significant strides in their learning when
programming is matched with a specific goal orientation. Relating technical terms about a childs condition or specific disability will do little to inform parents about the goals that can
