Most do agree that learning represents a change in a person or animal (Domjan, 2002). Behavior is involved in learning because the individual must act to gain the knowledge or skill. Behaviors may be studying, reading, observing, interacting, practicing, and so on. Vygotsky and others proposed that learning is first achieved through social interactions and that problem solving is always present for learning (Funderstanding, 2008). Vygotsky argued that culture is the foundation for learning (Funderstanding, 2008). It is ones culture that provides the background and foundation for learning, which is a reasonable conclusion since culture dictates what and how we each think. In terms of learning, there is an observable change in the individual who has learned something. Learning then changes behavior, which is another way in which the two are related. There are many types of learning. Some have been categorized, such as Blooms Taxonomy and Gardners knowledge types. Bloom identified seven types of learning that include: knowledge which has to do with simply remembering information one has gained; comprehension which allows the person to explain what the information means; application, which refers to gaining a deep enough understanding to apply the information in abstract settings; analysis when the person is able to break down a whole into its parts; and synthesis, the highest type of learning, when the person is able to put the parts together in such a way that they create a new whole (DO-IT, 2003). Gardner identified seven types of knowledge.
