which toys are really educational? What do infants and toddlers learn at play? As adults, people play to get rid of excess energy, to relax and sometimes to mitigate anger.
Before children are able to learn how to read and prior to preschool, the only thing they do is play. All the while--whether engaged in physical play or looking at
a mobile--they are learning. Yet, there are more structured activities that infants and toddlers can engage in that foster learning. That said, it is important not to push young minds
because at the infant and toddler stages, there should be a great deal of free exploration. Older children may find it beneficial to engage in specific activities, but younger
children want to learn everything at all times (Meyerhoff, 2001). In other words, they may go to the mall and point at an odd looking hat and verbalize a question
"Whats that?" The parent may explain that it is a hat but it is something newly learned because it does not look like the childs preconceived notion of what a
hat should look like. When deciding on specific activities, Meyerhoff (2001) suggests that children at this age be provided with an array of learning opportunities that will be helpful at
any given moment. Because younger children go from one activity to another rather quickly, and usually want to learn about what sparks their curiosity at the moment, having a great
deal of toys and activity centers will prompt learning. This may occur at a daycare center where various activity centers are set up. A child plays in the play kitchen
