There are several principles which include the encouraging of student-faculty contact, encouraging cooperation among students and encouraging active learning. It also suggests providing prompt feedback and the communication of high expectations. Further, it respects diverse talents and ways of learning. In evaluating these principles with Plato and Aristotles thoughts on knowledge and education, which practices are positive? Which ones are not? It has been a long time since Aristotle and Plato wrote and it is interesting to look at how things are now and how things were centuries ago. Perennialism is a concept that emanated from Aristotles rationalism . It suggests that mans primary characteristic is his ability to reason Perennialists do have particular preferences. For example, they emphasize the non-vocational facet of education (Ediger 267). In fact, they are often opposed to any vocational classes taken which coincides with their philosophy of education (267). One might say that the stance is rather snobbish, but many do separate vocational and academic curriculums. They are different. Perennialists like abstract ideas and stress mental development (267). Aristotle himself believed that the highest goal for any man was to meditate and meditation is emphasized in thinking about ethics and its development (267).
