Coach K because there is a vast difference between one who is a first a leader and one who is first a coach. The first thing to know about
Coach K is that he does believe in the importance of traits. He says that there are five qualities that make a team great: trust, caring, pride, communication and collective
responsibility (Krzyzewski and Phillips, 2000). They represent the five fingers in a fist. He also states that his leadership goal is to create a team where all of these qualities
fit together to make a powerful fist (Krzyzewski and Phillips, 2000). First, a team must gain a group mentality and then, it mist adopt a group identity (Krzyzewski and Phillips,
2000). These are principles of transformational leadership. These characteristics Coach K describes are related to traits. The underlying assumption of trait theory in terms of leaders is that people
are born with traits and qualities that make them good leaders. Traits that are identified as being associated with leadership include being dependable, tactful, organized decisive, ambitious and energetic (Changing
Minds, 2011). Coach K says that he spends time at the beginning of every season to get to know each player and what they are capable of. He even
invites a different player over to his home for dinner each week (Krzyzewski and Phillips, 2000). This allows him to see the person off the court and as a person.
