When creative people are involved, its especially important that managers and supervisors learn to bring out the best they can offer. This paper discusses the traits that are most desirable in co-workers, and what leaders can due to nurture and support the creative worker. Discussion In todays workplace, change is the norm. New technologies, new manufacturing systems and new methods of production demand that workers learn to "think outside the box"; that is, todays workers have to think in a way that is somewhat different from past methods (Bergstrom, 2002). We tend to label "creative people" as slightly loony and see them as wild-eyed painters, writers, musicians and artists, but thats not whats meant here. What Mumford and his colleagues mean in this context is that creative people can bring new solutions to the table because they look at problems in a slightly different way than more traditionally-minded workers might (Bergstrom, 2002). What is of concern is how to manage these people so that they can make the greatest contribution possible (Bergstrom, 2002). The idea that creative people benefit from having good management is new, because we have an idea that only individuals, working alone, can be creative (Bergstrom, 2002). But studies have shown that there is a relationship between certain leadership styles and creative ability in the real world (Bergstrom, 2002). The first thing leaders of creative people must possess is a good grasp of the technical aspects of their field, as well as plans and goals for their projects that match those of the organization itself (Bergstrom, 2002).
