1. Introduction The purpose of this study is look at how leadership is seen in real life environments and compare this to the leadership theories that have emerged. There are
leaders in all business at many different levels, they have a wide range of responsibilities and many will undertake their duties with little or no theoretical training in leadership skills.
The paper aims to look at the theories that concern leadership, looking at the types of leadership that may be observed and the characteristics of the leader and then undertake
a case study of a single leader to compare if and how theory may be compared to the practicalities of the commercial environment. This means carrying out an extensive literature
review and then studying a leader with the use o a self reporting questionnaire. The results are likely to show that although many theories indicate different styles and a range
of characteristics that in reality the leader may be a mixture of the different approaches, with a flexibility to adapt to suit the environment and as such will not fit
into a neat box 2. Methodology 2.1 The Approach This is a paper in which we will need to use both primary and secondary research. The paper will start with a
comprehensive literature review of the different approaches to leadership and the way characteristics may be noted in leaders according to different commentators. These will be obtained from books, academic and/or
professional journals and internet sources. Where any internet sources are used these will be verified as suitable and reliable. The correlation of these theories will allow for the study of
