that business develops is influenced by many factors. Issues such as competitive advantages and local resources as well as geographical position have been studied widely; less attention has been paid
to the aspects supporting business growth, such as leadership in the commercial environment. The patterns of leadership reflect the different cultures and practices that are seen in the areas.
The differences in leadership style may have strengths and weakness for both the western and the more eastern styles, however, to appreciate this there needs to be an understanding of
the inherent differences in style. The starting point can be Hofestede. Who looked at culture from a national dimension takes an holistic view, arguing that "mental programs in people
in general, and values and culture in particular" (Hofstede, 2003). Furthermore that the culture is "the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one group or category
of people from another" (Hofstede, 2003). In the original model Hofstede identified four different dimensions, these were power distance, individualism /collectivism, masculinity/femininity and uncertainty avoidance. These are also added to
with the later classification of long term orientation. The difference in leadership styles reflects the cultural diversity between the areas. Generally speaking, there will be a greater level of collectivism
in areas which have are communist culture, such as China, is Muslim areas and those where there are large class differences, such as India and Muslim countries there is a
higher level of power distance between employees and employers and in the west democratic styles reflect the general political nature of the country. There are many different ways in
which a leader may seek to lead. Different situations may require divergent styles, which will reflect the values and personality. However, there are there main styles; autocratic, democratic and non-directive.
