in a Strange Land and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Heinleins brand of science fiction tackles intergalactic conflicts from a moral perspective. The narratives in Heinleins works often
mirror the authors personal perceptions, which were shaped not only by the ideological times in which he lived, but also by his own life experiences. A 1929 graduate of
the U.S. Naval Academy, Heinlein served in the Navy until his retirement due to tuberculosis in 1934, having achieved the rank of Lieutenant (Drew, 2002). Out of all of
Heinleins works, perhaps none reflects his military background more powerfully than his text entitled Starship Troopers. First published in 1959, Starship Troopers is a controversial tale that considers the
role of the military in post-World War II society. In Heinleins futuristic view of Utopia, the military not only protects society, but also represents its family, cements its moral
foundation, and defines the concept of leadership through example within its officer hierarchy. The ways in which protagonist Juan "Johnnie" Rico learns about leadership and how he applies and
shares them with up-and-coming cadets throughout the book further lend themselves to parallels with young officers experiences in Officer Candidate School. Rico
hails from a privileged background, and Heinlein makes it clear that only through Johnnies military indoctrination in Officer Candidate School (OCS) and as a member of the Mobil Infantry does
he develop the attributes that make a successful leader. In the military realm, equality is the rule and not the exception. Taking a page out of Spartas successful
