Leadership has the potential to impact on an organization, it is leadership that determined organizational goals and has the final input on the organizational level strategy. In recent years, with
the failure of many banks in the 2008/9 recession, it may be argued that leadership in the banking sector can be very important, helping to differentiate between banks that failed,
such as the strategies of Sir Fred Goodwin, CEO of the Royal Bank of Scotland, with an aggressive growth and acquisition strategy that resulted in an over extended and over
exposed bank, which may be compared to the more conservative strategy of HSBCs Michael Geoghegan for a bank that had commercial success and a lower level of exposure. There
are many considerations in terms of the way leadership takes place and how it will impact on a firms performance, from the concept of leadership at different levels through to
the issue of leadership styles and culture and how the aspect of leadership may be impact on the employees. To consider this from the perceptive of an international bank these
different aspects need to be considered. 2. Leadership 2.1 Defining Leadership A leader may be defined as "1. a person or thing that leads. 2. a guiding or directing
head, as of an army, movement, or political group" (Dictionary.com, 2010). This shows that leadership is not limited to the commercial world; good leaders have been seen throughout history in
areas such as war, politics, education, social reform and many other aspects of life. In the commercial environment, according to Childs (1972) it is the leader, in the form
