Leadership in De Saint-Exuperys "Night Flight" ? July, 2000 ? properly! At the beginning of Antoine
de Saint-Exuperys novel "Night Flight," Fabien, a pilot in the 1930s who flies the Patagonia mail in South America, looks down on the lights of farmhouses that are scattered over
the Argentine plain. For a moment, Fabien briefly envies the simple rural life that these buildings represent (2). However, he also
gazes on moonlit clouds and, for a moment, feels an exaltation that the Argentine farmers will never know. The contrast between these two moods encapsulates neatly what the author is
trying to convey in this work, which is that grand endeavors and ordinary domesticity present conflicting claims upon the hearts of those who lead humanity to new horizons. Certainly
during the modern era?and one can conjecture that the same is true from the dawn of history?there have been men?and many women?whose actions have contributed to the advancement of the
human race toward a new goal. Sometimes this has been through exploration, sometimes by making new discoveries in science, but ?in recent years?these leaders have taken humanity toward new
horizons through the use of new technology. The airplane, as we know it today, was developed over years of trial and error
and experience. It was through the experiences of people such as Saint-Exuperys two protagonists, Fabien, the pilot and his boss, Riviere, that airplanes became increasingly dependable, opening up the world
and bringing humanity closer together. In this novel, Saint-Exupery gives the reader two examples of the kind of leadership that is necessary if humanity is going to continue to
