Japanese. It is a tense story filled with numerous characters who are seeking different things in life and from the war. While some just want to get home, others want honor or respect. The following paper examines, after a brief summary of the film, leadership in the film through a discussion of three characters: Nicholson, Saito, and Shears. Leadership in Bridge Over the River Kwai: Summary The film, as mentioned, takes place in a prisoner camp during WWII, run by the Japanese. In this camp there is the character of Shears, an American, who bribes the Japanese so that he does not have to engage in hard labor. The labor that the Japanese demand involves building a bridge over the river, a bridge that will unite Burma. Soon comes the character of Nicholson, a officer and British. He assumes he is the leader of the prisoners because he is the highest ranking individual but Shears tries to tell him things are not done normally there. Nicholson refuses to have his men do physical labor because that is against the Geneva Convention. But he and his men are essentially thrown into confinement until they change their minds and construct the bridge. The leader of the Japanese who is worried about getting this bridge done in time is Saito. Saito claims he will kill the British one by one if he does not comply. After some time in confinement Nicholson tells Saito they will supervise the building of the bridge. It is agreed and meanwhile Shears has escaped only to be found out in relationship to his impersonating Shears. He is then forced to return to the camp with others and destroy the bridge. The bridge is constructed and then it is ultimately destroyed as Saito, Nicholson, and Shears all ...
