examining and developing an understanding of leadership in a practical working context can be effectively utilised to enhance ones learning and the way leadership skills are developed and then utilized
in the workplace. The paper will start by looking at the context uin which the leadership will take place, then looking at leadership style to consider different approaches to leadership
and assess those adopted before looking at the way motivation takes place. 2. The Leadership Context The context being consider is a police force; the London Metropolitan Police. The
force had a very traditional hierarchical structure with different levels of seniority and authority creating a triangular structure, with a high level of accountability incorporated into the reporting structures. Leadership
has to take place at different layers within this structure, in each case the leadership values need to be fully complaint with the organization goals and values, but also has
to ensure that goals of the teams are reached and the team members are motivated. Leadership at team level is therefore very important, especially where there is a high
level of autonomy; the high level of accountability and strict hierarchy and reporting structure does not necessarily result in a highly controlled job task. The benefit of the police
force is the likelihood that those within the profession are likely to have entered it out if a sense of duty and perceive there role as a vocation rather than
