In 2003, the editors of Chief Executive magazine sought to identify and rank companies according to their leadership abilities. They necessarily were large companies, as complexity was one of the criteria on which they were assessed. In the end, three companies all qualified as leaders among leaders; judges were given 100 points to distribute among the three in an effort to find an acceptable tie-breaker. In the end, "result was a tie between IBM and J&J" (Spiro, 2003; p. 24).
