industrial relations, however these are old stereotypes and the industry has been one that has had to change in order to survive. Being a senior management in this industry means
that there are a large number of challenges faced and the student is unlikely to use a single management style. Even with the sue of human relations theories with empowerment
and tools such as job rotations and enrichment the task for the employees can still be boring and repetitive leading to potential dissatisfactions and under productivity from de-motivated staff. The
leadership style adopted has to take into account the needs of the staff, but balance them with the commercial pressures which are t increase productivity and decrease costs as well
as ensuring that quality is maintained. The industry is one where there is constant change. So using instinct rather than a single management or leadership style there may have
been the use of different approaches, especially if we consider a scenario where there is disagreement between staff on how a task should be performed.
It is known that where there are those who seek power, in the US this is seen as engendering distrust, as such the style (Kotter, 1999) is
one that does not seek to use an autocratic style and allows the employees to be heard, but still leads by example. As a leader the student is likely to
realise that they are reliant ion there employees and have to be sensitive to the way that power is used (Kotter, 1999). The use of expert power may have been
useful, with the student proving their position with their knowledge and the respect they have gained from their employees, as well as the ability to make decision where necessity. As
