belief systems. The well known epic entitled Piers Plowman exemplifies the degree to which the people believed so wholeheartedly in Christianity. At the time, there was a war within Christianity
which would result in a divided church and sects so contrary, they are deemed different religions today: Protestantism and Catholicism. According to a student, in Medieval times, people were close
minded and they believe everything that the priests told them. Also, according to the student, their thinking was two dimensional. Enter Nicollo Machiavelli and his well known work The Prince.
It was written during a time when people wanted to be led and certainly, Machiavelli knew that the people could easily be led. However, Machiavelli also felt that the people
needed to be led and that would be the best thing for them. His thinking was most certainly aligned with the dominant thinking of the church where it is presumed
people wanted to be spoon fed. In essence--both politically and spiritually--the people seemed to need extreme guidance and they did not really require freedom. It would not be until much
later, during the latter part of the eighteenth century, that the world would see immense fighting for freedoms sake. The French Revolution and the American Revolution were two battles that
are related to freedom in general, as well as freedom of religion. It was a step away from monarchy as the people suddenly had the fervor to change things and
embrace self-rule. Of course, in a Machiavellian world, leadership is not necessarily equated with brilliance. It is simply the act of leading that is favored as opposed to something approaching
