that has seen the need for change, with increasing pulls ion the resources and constraints placed in available resources. This is also an industry there were are many new developments
that require implementation and is also subject to political whim and theory in the way that health organisation may need to be adapt and change as a result of these
pressures. The student should be aware of these many pressures. Change need to be managed, therefore there are two aspects to the study of leadership in change, the way
the change is managed and the leadership style. For change we can look at several theories, but it is perhaps Lewin that is most appropriate for this study and of
leadership we will make use of the usually styles that are seen in many organisations such as autocratic, democratic and non-directive.
Managing change is complex; Organisational changes to do with new technology and software have a failure rate of 20%, mergers and acquisitions organisational changes fail at a rate of 29%
(Maurer, 1997). Reengineering is higher at 30% and of most concern is the figure for quality improvement, which is 50% (Maurer, 1997). If we apply this to health services and
the broad range of staff that could be involved in any change and the importance of a change then failure could not only be costly in financial terms, but also
