Cingular Wireless, a joint venture between SBC Communications and BellSouth (ATT Wireless, Cingular in talks on possible deal, 2004), received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to proceed with its acquisition of AT&T Wireless to form the countrys largest wireless communications service provider. Any merger requires great change within the companies that will form the newly-merged entity in the future, and this is particularly true with Cingular and AT&T Wireless. The purpose here is to identify some of the issues facing Cingular as the acquiring company and to make recommendations of how Cingular might approach the challenges it faces. Current Issues Shrinking Customer Base Of the "big six" wireless communications providers currently operating in the United States, Cingular and AT&T likely are the least popular at present. Each has been losing more customers than it has been attracting (Taylor, 2004), and if only one - or neither - of the pre-merger companies addresses this issue, then all others have the potential of becoming quite moot indeed. Cingular "lost nearly one-third of its customers last year. AT&T Wireless wasnt far behind, with quarterly churn rates averaging 2.6%. Average churn at Nextel Communications last year was 1.6% and 1.8% at Verizon Wireless" (Pappalrdo and Duffy, 2004; p. 14). Customers reasons for leaving Cingular and AT&T Wireless in favor of other providers most often are that physical coverage is insufficient, but there are other complaints as well.
