no single agreed-upon definition. Dictionaries typically define leadership as an ability to guide and direct and even influence people. Nobody would disagree with that as a general definition of leadership. At the same time, management is usually defined as having to do with handling, organizing and controlling some set of resources or even the affairs of an organization. In an effort to clarify what leaders are, McNamara (2008) suggested that leaders have vision, can influence others and can establish the direction for an organization. Leaders are capable of influencing and persuading others to follow their direction, to adopt the vision as their own and to work towards achieving that vision. And, to explain exactly what management is, Stanley (2004) stated: "Management is a profession that deals with human behavior. With this in mind, simple, accurate and sweeping generalizations are impossible" (p. 12). In 1996, Kotter asserted: "Management is a set of processes that can keep a complicated system of people and technology running smoothly" (p. 25). By contrast, "leadership is a set of processes that creates organizations in the first place or adapts them to significantly changing circumstances" (Kotter, 1996, p. 25). In an interview, Kotter explained it succinctly: management is about "coping with complexity [and] leadership is about coping with change" (Bencivenga, 2002). These definitions seem to encompass what other authors and theorists and even practitioners have said when attempting to define and contrast leadership and management. Kotter (1996) provided a table that illustrates the differences in functions and tasks between management and leadership.
