one thing they have in common is that they somehow get things done. This paper uses films, articles and books to describe various kinds of power; then it answers these questions about leadership: 1. How does a leader decide what kind of power is most effective? 2. What factors affect this choice? 3. What makes others feel powerful? empowered? 4. What is the consequence of powerlessness? Discussion The leaders that are referenced in the material are both fictional characters and real people, and there are bad leaders and good leaders. Lets go down the list; its the simplest way to tackle this. Our first leader is Juror #8 (Henry Fonda) in the 1957 film, Twelve angry men. The twelve angry men in this case are the jurors who are sitting on a murder trial. The film is shot entirely in the jury room as they deliberate the verdict (Dirks, 2007). When they take the first vote, only one man, Juror #8, votes "Not guilty" - not because he is convinced of the defendants innocence, but because he has a reasonable doubt as to his guilt (Dirks, 2007). That is, after all, the essence of the jury system: that there can be no doubt at all about a persons guilt, particularly as the penalty in this case is an automatic death sentence (Dirks, 2007). So, while the other 11 men are eager to believe the worst about the defendant-a Hispanic teenager, one of "them"-Juror #8 feels that if theyre going to put him to death, they can at least spend an hour or so talking about it (Dirks, 2007). Juror #8 is an architect, a "liberal-minded, patient truth-and-justice seeker" who instigates a "thoughtful reconsideration of the case against the accused" (Dirks, 2007).
