Introduction Leadership is defined by Northouse (2007) as "a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal". This is a very general definition of leadership that may be applied to many different contexts. Rost defines leadership as "Leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes" (quoted Terry, 1998). The dictionary defines a leader as someone who can "guide in direction, course, action, opinion" (Dictionary.com, 2010). A key element within these definitions is the element of influence and the way that this may be used to influence others. There are many examples of leaders that can be used to illustrate this perspective, from leaders that have had a bad reputation and achieved negative results, such as Hilter, through to inspirational leaders that have stimulate change and positive outcomes, such as Ghandi. It is notable that leadership itself does not designate a particular outcome; leaders may use their skills and influences for positive or negative outcomes, the way leadership is used reflect not the leadership skills themselves, but the way that the leader chooses to use them. In the commercial environment leaders may be assumed to be at the tope of organizations, where they have responsibilities to shareholders as well as other direct stakeholders such as employees. There may be issues, such as those indicated by agency theory which indicate that there are complications in the role of leadership, but in the commercial environment there is the need for there to be leaders who are both able and willing to ...
