reading about unethical behaviors and their negative social and economic impacts. It was the Enron scandal that rocked the country in terms of unethical business practices. Most recently, we experienced a market crash with all the major financial institutions failing in 2008. This affected the global economy and it took the U.S. into a major and profound recession that was only steps away from the 1929 experiences. The American taxpayer bailed out those companies at a cost in excess of a trillion dollars. That is an amount that most people can not even wrap their heads around. The reason for these unethical behaviors was greed. The irony is that research has always shown that ethical companies earn more money than unethical companies but these CEOs and other executives wanted quick profits and bonuses. Leadership and Ethics There are numerous traits that are associated with the ethical leader and regardless of the source one reviews, those traits remain much the same. Ethical theories regarding leadership consider two things, actins and behaviors and the personality and character of the leader. The traits and characteristics of the ethical leader are: treating people with dignity and respectfulness; serving others; justice; community building; and honesty (Leadership Theories; Management Study Guide). Respecting others means considering other peoples feelings and interests. It means that the leader gives credence to the ideas of other people (Leadership Theories). Leaders listen and nurture followers. Serving others is based on the premise that the leader cares about others. This is a type of altruism and it is observed when building teams in mentoring, and in empowering. Justice is not always easy because effective ethical leaders must take a stand.
