The seven major categories identified are: intellectual/Intelligence, Communication, Physical, Emotional, Social, Experience and Trustworthiness (American Library Association, 2007). Each author offers numerous traits for effective leaders. It may seem to readers when they review these lists that anyone who does not possess all will never be an effective leader but that is not true. The lists are actually conglomerations of the research conducted and in all likelihood, no single leader they surveyed possess every trait on the list. The following ten traits are most often mentioned in the literature as the most essential: 1. Vision. Effective leaders have a vision of where they and their organization are going and they are capable of inspiring others to share that vision (American Library Association, 2007; Kautz, 2007). Vision is on all lists for leadership traits. 2. Charisma. Another trait that is on nearly all lists. This trait makes the leader seem larger than life (American Library Association, 2007). 3. Intellectual/Intelligence. The leader must be intelligent, someone who can learn from experience and continues learning throughout life, and also uses this trait to delegate (American Library Association, 2007). 4. Emotional Stability. Another way to say this is the person must be well-adjusted, self-confident, enthusiastic, ambitious, is willing to take risks after careful analysis, is honest and ethical (American Library Association, 2007; Kautz, 2007). There is more and more emphasis being placed on integrity, honesty and ethical codes. 5. Excellent communication skills. This includes aural and written skills.
