knowledge will provide the basis for training. At some point, the leadership trainee needs to practice some of what he or she has learned through cognitive processes. The best way is to have the trainee experience some of what they will experience on the job. Various exercises can be designed for more practical learning. These could be as simple as preparing and delivering a presentation to a group about a specific topic. Simulations provide an excellent training ground for practice. In-Basket exercises are used to simulate the many and diverse administrative tasks the leader will need to complete. Leaders and managers must deal with their in-basket every day, which sometimes overflows with correspondence, documents, memos, and such (SIOP, 2011). The trainee must respond to any correspondence that needs a response, deal with personnel issues that are in the in-basket, or whatever else is there. Time limits need to be placed on the trainee to more accurately reflect a leaders real life (SIOP, 2011). The in-basket exercises help leader trainees gain skills in handling multiple tasks, prioritize, delegate, and analyze information quickly. On the job, leaders must also deal with interruptions, both phone and in-person drop-ins. Role-playing has been used for decades in many different situations. For example, role-playing can be used to train people in conflict management and this could be one of the scenarios in leadership training. Role-playing simulates different interpersonal challenges we all face when we work with other people. The trainee is given background information about the situation and is then asked to play a specific role in the scenario (SIOP, 2011).
