1. Introduction Leadership has been a subject of study for many years. Early works have written about the way
leadership should take place, Sun Tzus The Art of War incorporated aspects of leadership and strategy, later Machiavellis The Prince deal with political leadership and tactics (Mintzberg et al.,
2003). In recent years many theorists have looked at the concept of leadership and the way that leaders should undertake those tasks, from works of Kotter (1990) who look at
the personality, value and behavioural traits considering the differences between managers and leaders, to Handy (2005) who saw the need for leadership to change in line with changing structure. More
dedicated approaches to modelling leadership have included studies on personality traits and the attitudes adopted by leaders looking at the way these will impact on employees, productivity and motivation (Huczynski
and Buchanan, 2007). The study of leadership has undergone ongoing evolution, with the former foundations being used to create new models, with competes such as path-goal theory and contingency
theory strongly based on former models. The approaches have added a great deal, but we may be left asking how leadership theory will evolve in order to help with assessment
and development of leadership skills. 1.1 Problem Statement The problem with leadership theories is their complexity and wide variety, when looking at the theories in hindsight may appear to
incorporate common sense as an ingredient. However, it is the need to look forward rather than back which is a key element in the way leadership is assessed and
