India. This essay traces some of the highlights of Gandhis political life. The essay discusses whether Gandhi was a transactional leader of a transformational leader. Gandhi Evolution of
a Leader Mahatma Gandhi was born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869 in a town that is now called Gujarat. He was later given the title Mahatma by his followers. The
term means great soul; the people also called him bapu which means Father. He is known as the Father of India. He was able to fill both roles for the
people in India and in South Africa. He was married at age 13 and breaking from tradition, he left his wife and traveled to London to study law (Desai,
2010). He returned to India and became a lawyer for a trading firm in South Africa. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a large population of Indians
living and working in South Africa where they were treated as second-class citizens (Desai, 2010). Gandhi had never experienced discrimination and he determined he would fight against racial discrimination for
the Indian population living and working in South Africa. He moved back to India two decades later but by that time, he had become known as a social reformer and
somewhat as a political powerhouse. He had gathered a group of very talented men and women who supported him and his ideas and goals. They were all volunteers and
many lived with him and his wife at one of two experimental communities in South Africa called the Tolstoy Farm and the Phoenix Settlement (Desai, 2010; Lang, 2006). The organization
