the styles of leadership examined by Warren Bennis and Nanus in their book Leaders. Principles of Leadership Warren Bennis has been acknowledged as an expert in the field of organizational
development for many years (Warren Bennis). He admired Douglas McGregor and his "Theory Y" motivational approach, but "found the theory unworkable without some adaptation in the form of strengthened
structure and direction" (Warren Bennis). McGregors "Theory Y" concerned workers; it said that its natural for people to expend effort working and not necessary to control people to get
them to work; and that under proper conditions the average person will seek responsibility (Douglas McGregor, 2005). It seems logical to assume that good leaders could help employees develop
to their full potential. In the 1980s, calling upon years of experience and study, Bennis wrote Leaders with co-author Burt Nanus. It consists of interviews with "90 successful American
leaders" who sat down with Bennis for up to four hours (Warren Bennis). The book contains Benniss and Nanuss core ideas about leadership. First, all leaders have
"an intense vision and commitment" that draw others to them; in turn, the leaders pay attention to other people (Warren Bennis). Second, leaders have the ability to "communicate their
vision and bring it to life for others"; third, leaders establish trust by using a set of actions that implement their vision; fourth, leaders are able to use "the creative
deployment of self through positive self-regard" to establish and hold their position, as well as inspiring others (Warren Bennis). A leader who has positive self-regard is a person who
